55% Pinot Noir, 34% Pinot Meunier, & 6% Chardonnay from Kent, England.
It’s hard to believe that such ripeness from grapes that are used in Champagne are proliferating in England, a traditionally chilly island. The effects of climate change have -- controversially & over time -- put England in the mix with other sparkling wine producing regions.
Balfour Winery has a reputation for producing England’s finest sparkling wines. 1503 is the year that the estate’s historic manor was built. The winery is located in Kent, a short distance to the Southwest of London.
Their sparkling rose is a blend of 62% Pinot Noir, 20% Chardonnay, & 18% Pinot Meunier hand harvested from 5-15 year old vineyards. It sees a minimum of 9 months in the bottle on the lees & still Pinot Noir is added for color during dosage.
The rose bubbly is a medley of strawberries, raspberries , & herbal undertones over a fresh acidity that provides balance to all of that sumptuous fruit. The lees aging adds a hint of brioche to the chalk textured finish.
“With the grace of a ballerina and the color of said dancer’s slippers, this is a vibrant and delicate rosé.”
