About 60% Grenache, 40% Syrah (‘saingnée’) The 2022 vintage was the earliest harvest we’ve had for the Maz Caz project. A very moderate winter was followed by an early spring. Then everything else came early: bud break, fruit set and the summer heat all came a little ahead of schedule, and there was very little rain. Rosé is tricky when you’re doing the saignée method, because you want to time the harvest just right so you can also make the red wine from the remaining juice and skins. This year I think we picked right on time. The flavor profile of both wines is just what I was going for. The uniquely pale color of the rosé—even after 5 hours of skin contact—is a first. This wine in particular is always such a great study in the vintage variability of weather patterns. It’s always different and that’s what I love about it. No added sulfur. Pairing Note: grilled veggies, grilled meats, Thanksgiving dinner, meant to be drunk year-round.
