Álvaro Palacios was one of nine children born into a winemaking family based in Rioja, Spain. Alvaro traveled to Bordeaux to study winemaking under the legend, Jean-Pierre Moueix at Chateau Pétrus, and instead of playing it safe and returning to his family's winery he branched off on his own and took a chance on an ancient but defunct winemaking area, called Priorat. He has since gained fame and notoriety as one of the best winemakers in Spain. This priorat is grown on steep terraced vineyards that were originally constructed by carthusian monks centuries ago. It is composed of 50% Garnacha and 50% Samsó from 50+ year old vines then aged 10 months in French barrels (up to 20% new).
