100% Picpoul from Languedoc-Roussillon, France.
Despite being one of the oldest grapes in the Languedoc, Picpoul (the lip stinger in French!) was nearly eradicated in the 19th century phylloxera blight. Replanting in the Languedoc was primarily red grapes but there was a region near the town of Pinet that had soil that was actually too generous for red grapes. The limestone, clay, & ocean fossils found in this huge expanse of land was perfect for the “forgotten grape”.
Given the proximity to the Mediterranean Sea, the wine has saline & floral notes to go with its zippy acidity. Totally refreshing, light on the palate, with bright citrus & green apple crispness, it drinks somewhere between Sauvignon Blanc & Muscadet. One of my favorites!
