100% Primitivo (a.k.a. Zinfandel) from Wahluke Slope, Washington, USA.
Primitivo’s modern day home is primarily in Puglia and southern Italy but the grape probably arrived from Croatia many years ago with names sounding like Star Wars characters --Tribidrag, Kralosija, & Pribidrag!
Primitivo was introduced to the United States in the early 19th century. In the 1990’s Zinfandel boomed in the United States and DNA studies proved that Zinfandel and Primitivo were genetically the same grape. This study was crucial in the resurgence of interest in the Primitivo grape still growing in Europe but floundering.
Over the years Primitivo was grown throughout California and in Washington crazy man and wine genius Charles Smith planted Primitivo at the Northridge Vineyard on the Wahluke Slope, a site sitting at high elevation with cooler evenings to create a late ripening grape with lots of minerality and fruit concentration. Italian inspired & locally produced, Charles Smith was off & running!
Darkness is at the heart of this wine -- black fruit, dark cherries, leather, and soil collide with smoky undercurrents producing a full bodied wine with medium tannins and smooth finish.
