The region of Priorat has risen to prominence in the last 25 years, going from being relatively unknown to producing some of the most highly valued wines in the world. Wine production goes back to the 12th century when Carthusian monks planted vines on the steep hillsides. Priorat is named after the Priory that they built on the hills there.
