75% Native Red Varieties / 25% White Varieties from Douro, Portugal. Organic.
Quinto Do Infantado was founded in 1816 for King D. Pedro IV in Pinhao, in the Douro region of Portugal and over the years has become a leading producer of port and other red wines in the hands of the Roseira family.
Palhete is Portuguese for the British term “ claret” referring to France’s Bordeaux wines which were made in the 14th and 15th centuries. Back in the day these wines were a blend of many varietals both red and white, lighter in style and certainly not as prestigious as the "claret" that Bordeaux developed centuries later.
Palhete, in this case, is a reflection of that earlier interpretation of claret - 75% various native red varieties and 25% white varieties sourced from a single plot of 40 year old vines - a true field blend planted at 2000 feet in the Douro. The bunches are harvested together by hand and partly destemmed. The mix of grapes macerates long enough to take on a light red color. Having very little exposure to air, the wine has a natural and gentle spritz upon opening.
On the palate it defies expectations with remarkable lightness and freshness. There’s a captivating nose of wild leaves and brambles with earthy notes and a carob-like sweetness!
