100% Pineau d'Aunis from the Loire Valley, France.
One of the Loire’s rarest grapes, Pineau d’ Aunis, was nearly wiped out by phylloxera in the 1860’s. A notoriously finicky grape, it was widely replaced with easier-to-grow, higher yielding varietals. Around 20 years ago local winemakers, fearing the grape’s extinction, made an effort to put it back on the map. Today there’s almost 1000 acres of Pineau d’ Aunis planted in France. Pascal Janvier crafts a 100% Pineau d’ Aunis cuvée which looks and drinks like a young Pinot Noir.
The wine is bright, juicy, and lively, with strawberry and sour cherry notes and spicy, black pepper finish. There’s a slight effervescence and best served slightly chilled like a Beaujolais. This wine will pair up with anything or nothing at all! A Kermit Lynch’s standout and favorite!
