L’Ancien comes from Jean Paul Brun’s home village of Charnay in southern Beaujolais. The vines are 40-60 years old & planted in sandy clay & limestone slopes featuring “doree” – a golden limestone rich in iron. Known as the “the land of golden stones”, the wine is vinified in the traditional Burgundian-style rather than the normal carbonic maceration process typical of the region.
Brun believes the wine should emphasize the fruit & not the weight. The palate shows lush, ripe berry fruits backed by a citrus-like acidity. The finish is long & sappy bursting with aromas of red currants, raspberries, & strawberries! This wine is a favorite amongst Gamay purists!
