100% Cabernet Franc from Bourgueil (Loire Valley), France. Biodynamic.
Groulleau is the sleeper varietal lurking in the shadows of Loire’s premier red varietals -- Cabernet Franc, Gamay, & Pinot Noir. Groulleau is yet another descendent of the “Casanova of Grapes” Gouais, which mutated to a red grape. Grolleau comes from the word “grolle” which means “crow” in old French & refers to the color of the grapes.
Plantings of Groulleau had been in free fall until the global rise & appreciation of rose wines came about years ago. Today, Groulleau is used primarily for roses, both still & sparkling. However when the yields are kept to a minimum at harvest Groulleau is capable of making smooth, fruity, & fun reds!
Catherine & Pierre Breton farm 11 hectares east of Bourgueil in the village of Restigne. They are international icons in the natural wine movement & their farm has been certified organic since 1991. Their wine is 100% Groulleau from 25 year old vines that has gone through carbonic maceration in cement tanks. The wine is very Beaujolais Noveau in style but more elevated with an expressive bouquet of strawberries & raspberries, hints of stone fruits, rhubarb, & notes of pepper.
Refreshing & bright with low tannins and medium acidity, this wine is dangerously quaffable with a chill!
