The soils in Montecillo are extremely rocky and austere, limiting yields and increasing concentration in the tiny berries. The deep roots and mountain-grown nature of this Cabernet fruit lends itself to crafting a wine of place that has the backbone to age gracefully for decades in the cellar. This beautiful and rugged site is surrounded by native oak and madrone trees that, along with the vines, thrive in the combination of well-drained, rocky volcanic soil and cooling afternoon breezes sweeping in from the Russian River Valley below. The vines at Clajeux, formerly called Wild Iris Vineyard, were planted in 1999 by Don and Carolyn Vogt, who saw the amazing potential of this site for growing world-class Cabernet Sauvignon. Since 2003, we have worked with the same 14 rows in this vineyard, and have found that this fruit yields our most elegant Cabernet, with incredible depth of color, varietal flavor, and refined, streamlined tannins and acidity. The wines from this site seem the most approachable in their youth out of our three Cabernet vineyards, but still possess the framework for long-term cellaring. George fell in love with Ribolla Gialla in the early ‘90s while traveling in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region of Northeastern Italy, and committed to bringing this variety home to California. Cuttings were taken from Josko Gravner’s heralded vineyard in Friuli and suitcased into the United States, signaling the first arrival of this ancient variety in California. In 2001, George and Elsa planted the cuttings in their home vineyard at the foot of Mt. Veeder in the Western Napa Valley. The soils here are deep, alluvial, gravelly clay-loam and the vines are densely-planted, encouraging competition between the vines. The site benefits from early afternoon shading, while daytime temperatures are moderated by proximity to the adjacent redwood-forested slopes of Mt. Veeder. The vineyard is now owned by the Bengier family and farmed to perfection by Steve Matthiasson.
